Continuing Education:

7 CMTE credits available for music therapists and 6 NYS CEs available for LCATs and Social Workers.  All participants will receive a certificate of completion.

Course Instructors:

  • Dr. Concetta Tomaino DA, LCAT, MT-BC is the Executive Director and co-founder, with renowned author neurologist Oliver Sacks,  of the Institute for Music and Neurologic Function and was Senior Vice President for Music Therapy at CenterLight Health System (formerly Beth Abraham Family of Health Services), where she worked from  1980 to 2016. In 2017, she and the IMNF relocated to the campus of Wartburg, a senior residential and healthcare facility, in Mt. Vernon, NY.

    Dr. Tomaino is internationally known for her research in the clinical applications of music and neurologic rehabilitation.  She lectures on music therapy throughout the  world.

    Her work has been featured in national programs including 48 Hours and 60 Minutes; in international programs including the BBC; and in books on health and healing. Dr. Sacks book Musicophilia is dedicated to her.

    Dr. Tomaino is Past-President of the American Association for Music Therapy and Past -Vice President and founding board member for the International Association for Music and Medicine.

    She received the Award of Accomplishment from Music Therapists for Peace at the United Nations. In 2014, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association for Music Therapy. In 2011 she received an inaugural Burton Grebin Innovator of the Year Award from the NY Continuing Care Leadership Coalition (CCLC ).  She was honored with the 2010 Professional Practice Award from the American Association for Music Therapy and also as one of "Three Wise Women" by the National Organization of Italian American Women.  In 2004 she received the Music has Power Award from the IMNF and the Zella Bronfman Butler Award which is given by the UJA-Federation of New York in partnership with the J.E. and Z.B. Butler Foundation to professionals in the UJA-Federation agency network for their outstanding work on behalf of individuals with physical, developmental, or learning disabilities.  In 1999 she received a Touchstone Award from "Women in Music'' for her visionary spirit.

    She is an Adjunct Professor at Lehman College, CUNY.

  • Dr. Melita Belgrave, PhD, MT-BC is an Associate Professor of Music Therapy and Associate Dean for Culture and Access at the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University. Her research interests are music therapy with older adults and intergenerational programming. She has presented at regional, national, and international conferences, and her research has been published in national and international journals. She co-authored the text "Music Therapy and Geriatric Populations: A Handbook for Practicing Music Therapists." Additionally, Belgrave has authored a chapter in and co-edited the text for " Music Therapy in a Multicultural Context: A Handbook for Music Therapy Students and Professionals ."
  • Dr. Julene K Johnson, PhD, BM is a cognitive neuroscientist with an undergraduate degree in music (flute performance and music therapy). She is a Professor in the UCSF School of Nursing's Institute for Health & Aging and co-director of the Sound Health Network. She has a long-standing interest in studying music and health in both healthy aging and persons living with dementia. Her previous work investigated preserved music skills in persons with Alzheimer disease and understanding the relationship between brain and music recognition in various neurodegenerative diseases.  In 2010, she was a Fulbright Scholar in Jyväskylä, Finland where she studied how community choirs help promote wellbeing among older adults. Dr. Johnson recently completed a large cluster-randomized trial that examined the effects of a community choir on the health and wellbeing of culturally diverse older adults.

Course Description:

The Nazareth College Music Therapy Program is pleased to present a one-day symposium: "Music in Eldercare and Aging: Current Trends and Topics".  Featured speakers Melita Belgrave, PhD, MT-BC (Arizona State University), Julene Johnson, PhD (University of California, San Francisco / The Sound  Health Network), and Concetta Tomaino, DA, LCAT, MT-BC (Institute for Music & Neurologic Function) are experts in the use of music to enhance the lives of elders. Attendees will learn about music in inter-generational settings, group singing to enhance well-being, the neurological foundation for use of music in senior health care, and considerations of diversity, equity, and inclusion in music experiences for elders. The program will include time for dialogue with the speakers and a list of publications and resources.  Music therapists and eldercare activity and recreation directors, administrators, clinicians, and community support advocates are invited to attend and network with the Nazareth Music Therapy faculty and with each other.

Objectives : At the end of this course, participants will be able to…

1. Learn how music can aid in improving memory and attention, to enhance gait and balance in persons with neurologic disease (ex. Parkinson's disease), and to enhance clinical outcomes for patients with executive function problems. (BCD III.A.2.l,u,dd,ee,gg)

2. Identify 2-3 identity-based considerations for older adult participants in group or individual music settings. (BCD I.4.d,g,k,l,m & II.D.9.)

3. Identify 3 health and well-being benefits of community music making for older adults. (BCD II.D.2,3 & III.2.)

4. Identify aging programming and benefits for older adults in 2 different types of intergenerational models. (BCD II.D.2,3 & III.2.)

Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites for this course.

Cancellation and Refund Policy :

Written cancellation must be received via email by November 9th for the full refund of the workshop fee.  Please send an email to Colleen Weldgen ( cweldge7@naz.edu ) if you need to cancel.  Programs may be canceled by the Nazareth College Creative Arts Therapy Department based on low attendance.  Full refunds will be issued.
